Kinesiotape was developed in Japan in the 1970s. As a therapy method, it differs from conventional tape bandages. While classic tape immobilizes the joint with solid materials, kinesio tape is elastic and is not used for a resting position. The application requires a special technique which, due to its properties, promotes lymphatic drainage and blood circulation in the affected area. Mobility is maintained during the regeneration phase.
Typical areas of application
The possible range of applications for kinesiotapes is very diverse and can be ideally combined with physiotherapeutic measures.
- Joint complaints (overloading, arthrosis)
- Tendinitis
- Back pain (cervical spine, thoracic spine syndrome, sciatica)
- Sports injuries (torn cruciate ligaments, torn ligaments in the ankle or knee joint)
- Herniated discs
- Shoulder and neck tension
What is kinesiotape?
Kinesiotapes are extremely elastic, finely woven cotton tapes with a strong, thin acrylic adhesive layer. The thickness and elasticity of Kinesiotape is exactly the same as the structure of human skin. Like a second skin, the material is able to adapt perfectly to every natural movement of the body. The straps are highly elastic, breathable and skin-friendly. Once applied, the tape remains on the affected area for four to seven days, is waterproof and does not slip. Medical kinesiotapes are considered an effective complementary treatment method.
Why does the body react positively to this treatment?
Countless patients have achieved faster healing of blunt injuries or inflammations through the use of kinesiotapes. Pain sensors are located between the dermis and epidermis, i.e. the two uppermost layers of the skin. If the first layer of skin is lifted by a kinesiotape, the blood flows faster through the injured areas. Sensory touch receptors are activated and coordination, body awareness and muscle tension are promoted. This improved blood circulation influences underlying structures and accelerates the healing process.
Mechanism of action
The primary effect of a kinesiotape is based on the tension that is created after it is applied to the skin. Depending on the treatment objective, the upper layers of the skin are mechanically displaced. Receptors inhibit the pain stimulus and the lymphatic drainage is improved. This counteracts swelling. The controlled drainage in blood and lymph vessels has a positive effect on the metabolism in muscles and regions. Muscular imbalances are compensated for, making smooth movements easier.
Visceral taping
Kinesiology tapes are suitable for visceral dysfunctions of internal organs such as the liver, stomach or intestines. The combination of treatment with classic taping is the rule. Both areas of application are subject to reflex-related interaction between parietal and visceral structures. The skin, pain and fascia concepts are all based on neuromuscular processes. Taping creates a pain overlay on countless receptors, which are to be inhibited by the stimuli from the skin, fascia, muscles or joints to the brain.
Areas of application with visceral taping
Kinesiotapes are used in visceral treatments to positively influence functional disorders in the area of the intestines and colon. Possible indications are a circulatory disorder in the mesosigmoid, constipation or defecation problems. For the horizontal part, the transverse colon, the kinesiotape is used to relieve complaints such as flatulence, intestinal paralysis, congestion or a defecation disorder. The small intestine is treated for problems such as hypersensitivity or congestion. The aim is to improve bowel movement and blood flow.
Kinesio Munich – lymphotherapeutic treatment
Kinesiotapes are used as a complementary treatment method to physiotherapy or manual therapy. They serve as further therapy between the physio appointments. Special lymph tapes are applied to stimulate the lymph flow in order to improve fluid circulation. Elastic tapes in various qualities are applied as an additive to manual lymphatic drainage. After about 30 minutes of sticking time, you can do sports or take a shower. Kinesio-Taping Munich is a perfect alternative for the treatment of instabilities, hematomas, lipedema and after surgical procedures.
Do health insurance companies cover the costs of kinesio taping?
As a rule, around two to three applications are required. The cost is between €7 and €12, depending on the system. The statutory health insurance companies do not pay for this service, but private insurance companies cover the treatment costs. We offer kinesio taping as an IGeL (individual health service) to patients with statutory health insurance. If you have any questions about extended billing – we will be happy to advise you at our physiotherapy practice in Munich!
